From the mouth of Octavia Butler:-

“First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won’t. Habit is persistence in practice.”

  1. Hmmm that’s interesting. I’m going to have to mull over this. I think of things that inspire me versus things that are habit. I have a habit of brushing my teeth, yet I am inspired to do so because I don’t want my teeth to rot. Maybe we could use a little of both? Is this possible? What do you think?

    • Let’s see. I use this quote to draw artistic breath. Because, to quote Sylvia Plath (a women with whom I share much, let’s leave it at that, shall we), “The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.”
